Introduction

The Karajet Free Float Steam Trap is a type of mechanical steam trap that distinguishes between condensate and steam based on their differences in density and level. When condensate enters the trap chamber, it can lift the free-floating ball from its seat. The free float is a hollow, seamless metal ball positioned on a temperature-sensitive lever and over the outlet orifice. As the ball rises, the outlet orifice opens, allowing condensate to discharge from the system.

Once the condensate has been completely discharged and the trap chamber becomes filled with live steam, the free-floating ball returns to its seat and closes the outlet orifice, preventing the loss of live steam.

Operating Principle and Stages of the Free Float Steam Trap

1. Start-up Discharge                  

During start-up, when the steam trap is cold, the air-vent ring keeps Valve A open, allowing air to be discharged completely. As the previously accumulated cold condensate enters the trap, the free-floating ball rises and opens outlet orifice B, allowing the condensate to discharge.

2. Hot Condensate Discharge   

After air and other non-condensable gases have been discharged and steam and condensate enter the trap, the trap heats up and Valve A closes. However, as long as condensate is present, it can continue to lift the free-floating ball from its seat, allowing condensate to discharge through Orifice B.

3. Continuous Response          

The entry of air or residual condensate into the trap causes the temperature to decrease, resulting in contraction of the air-vent ring. Valve A immediately opens to discharge the air. When higher-temperature condensate enters the trap, the ring expands and closes Valve A.

4. Complete Closure                 

When condensate flow to the trap stops, the float closes Valve B, which is always sealed below the water level. The upper part of the trap chamber becomes filled with steam, keeping Valve A closed. The trap is then completely sealed, preventing the leakage of live steam.
